Bill.

We’ve got three full time cashiers to fill in: Sophie, Carlotta, and Min-Jee. .

Juanita

Oh, oh! I see a problem for 10% Tuesday. .

Bill.

What’s that? .

Juanita.

We have three big blocks to fill, so we have to use all three full timers. But Min-Jee has a restriction for Tuesday morning. .

Bill.

No problem! Let’s fill in the morning with the other two full timers—and put Min-Jee in the afternoon. . . . Let’s start both Carlotta and Sophie at 8 o’ clock. Start Min-Jee at noon and have her work until 7. So we have that three-hour block to fill in front of Min-Jee in Column 4. .

Juanita.

Perhaps worse is that Column 3 has an hour of empty space. We can’t be short-handed for that long. And I don’t think it’s worth it for us to start building this schedule from scratch again. .

Bill.

We’ll just have Sophie work an hour of overtime. Paying the overtime is cheaper than having us rework the schedule. .

Juanita.

Good thinking. But what about that 9-12 block in Column 3? We can’t have trainees for 10% Tuesday! .

Bill .

Is a part-timer available for a three-hour shift on Tuesday morning? .

Juanita.

Let’s see. Ziva’s already working on Tuesday. So are Hasan, Ingrid, and Dulani. That leaves Aaron and Natalia, but they can’t come in on Tuesday. . . . . . How strict are our company rules about not having trainees on 10% Tuesday? .

Bill.

They’re quite strict. We need our best staff out there to serve customers on our busiest day. .

Juanita.

Then I guess this leaves us to call in a head cashier to work as a regular cashier. Pierre and Elaine are already working on Tuesday. Can Farazay or Katerina make it? .

Bill.

Farazay is only available from Friday to Sunday. Katerina cannot come in before 10. .

Juanita.

With our available staffing, calling in Katerina is the best of all our options. It looks like we are going to be short-handed between 9 and 10. .

Bill.

But remember that when we call in a part-time person, we must offer them at least a three-hour shift. So Katerina has to work from 10 until 1. .

Juanita.

So let’s cut Min-Jee’s shift from 12 to 7 to 1 to 7. .

Bill.

Right. . . . . So hours allocated are 8 for Carlotta, 9 for Sophie, and 6 for Min-Jee. And we just bumped Katerina’s hours to 30. .

Juanita.

It’s good you’re keeping track. . . . . Just to confirm: We have two blocks of time we cannot fill on Tuesday: the half hour between Carlotta and Ziva and the hour in Column 4. .

Bill.

We’ve done the best we can. . . . . It looks like we have two full time shifts to fill on Monday. Shall we go there? .

Juanita.

Let’s do it! .

Bill.

It looks like one eight-hour shift and one seven-hour shift. Carlotta and Sophie?

Juanita.

Let’s look at the restrictions again . . . . Carlotta has to leave by 6. Sophie can’t work Wednesday. So we’ll give Carlotta the morning shift. And we’ll definitely use Sophie here because we can’t use her on Wednesday. .

Bill.

Good . . . . Carlotta 16, Sophie 17, and Min-Jee 6. .

Juanita.

Wednesday is like Monday, except Min-Jee goes in Sophie’s spot. .

Bill.

Carlotta 24, Sophie 17, Min-Jee 13. .

Juanita.

Thursday has two full shifts: eight hours in the morning and in the afternoon. .

Bill.

Sophie in the morning and Min-Jee in the afternoon? .

Juanita.

Sure! .

Bill.

Carlotta 24, Sophie 25, Min-Jee 21. .

Juanita.

Friday has one full shift . . . . Min-Jee from 11 to 7? .

Bill.

Sure . . . . Carlotta 24, Sophie 25, Min-Jee 28. . . . . One more shift each and our full-timers will have their 32 hours. .

Juanita.

But look closer. We have only two full shifts left. One on Saturday and one on Sunday. And Saturday has two short blocks covering similar hours. We can’t put trainees in both blocks. .

Bill.

Let’s take away Dulani’s Saturday shift. This will create an additional six-hour shift.

Juanita.

Good idea. We’ll give the 10 to 6 shift to Carlotta; that will make her 32 hours. If we give Min-Jee Dulani’s shift plus the three hours not yet scheduled, she will have 34 hours. . . . Man, are we good! .

Bill.

And for Sunday. There’s a six-hour shift we could give to Sophie. Unfortunately, it’ll be one hour short of her 32 hours. .

Juanita.

Take an hour from Dulani! He still has a three-hour shift. .

Bill.

OK, Dulani gets cut another hour. Sophie now has exactly 32 hours. .

Juanita.

Well, will you look at that schedule! Not too bad, if I don’t say so myself.

Bill.

We only had one hour we couldn’t fill. There’s four half-hour spots where the store is a little shorthanded. And only eight hours of overtime! .

Juanita.

You know, if we had just one more part-timer, we could have fixed everything. .

Bill.

But that option is not available to us. . . . . Shall we finish the schedule by adding the trainees? .

Juanita.

Let’s finish.
