Transcript 2: Head Cashiers

Bill

Let’s start with the head cashiers. Who’s available next week?

Juanita

We have Pierre and Elaine as full-time and Farazay and Katerina as part-time. Our hardest cashier to place will be Farazay. She is only available on Friday after noon and on Saturday and Sunday.

Bill

So let’s fill in Farazay’s days first. We can put her on shift for Friday afternoon, right?

Juanita

Correct. But I’m seeing another problem we need to solve first. . . With only four head cashiers available this week, we won’t be able to schedule three head cashiers each day.

Bill

So?

Juanita

Because we need to have at least one head cashier on duty for 17 hours each day, we can only have two shifts for head cashiers. This comes to one eight-hour shift and one nine-hour shift for head cashier for each day.

Bill

And we’re not supposed to be scheduling people for overtime.

Juanita

Store management isn’t going to like that!

Bill

I don’t see much choice here. A little overtime for head cashiers seems to be necessary to build this week’s schedule . . . . Let’s run these eight- and nine-hour shifts for this week. . . . . If you get any complaints from management, let me handle them, OK?

Juanita

OK, it’s in your hands. They might not say anything. A few extra hours of overtime is not that critical.

Bill

Back to Farazay on Friday. She can’t start until noon, so let’s give her the evening shift.

Juanita

Eight or nine hours?

Bill

Nine. Since she’s part-time; we should give the extra hour to the part-timer.

Juanita

So she starts at 3 and closes the store. Who should we have in the morning?

Bill

Katerina is out. She can’t come until 10. Either Pierre or Elaine.

Juanita

Let’s put Pierre for Friday morning then. His restriction is Sunday and Monday. If we can give him this Saturday off, he’ll be happy with this three-day break.

Bill

Let’s see if we can do this for Pierre, then. He’s in the schedule for Friday morning. Let’s work on Saturday.

Juanita

To make things simple for Farazay, why don’t we give her the other two evening shifts for the weekend?

Bill

Good idea. Let’s pencil her in from 3 to midnight on Saturday and Sunday as well. That will give her 27 hours for the week: 24 regular and 3 overtime.

Juanita

So now we need Saturday and Sunday mornings. We’ll have to use Elaine for both mornings. Of the four head cashiers, she is the only head cashier for these shifts.

Bill

OK. Elaine from 7 to 3 Saturday, and Sunday?

Juanita

OK. Let’s go for Monday. . . . Pierre is still gone.

Bill

We shouldn’t use Farazay any more; she is almost up to full-time hours. . . . Elaine is working Sunday morning; Let’s just keep her on the same shift for Monday.

Juanita

OK. Who should we put in the afternoon? Katerina?

Bill

She seems to the only head cashier left. Katerina works Monday afternoon. From 3 to midnight?

Juanita

Yes, she’s also part-time, so she should get the extra overtime hour. . . . . Now Tuesday . . . . Pierre is back.

Bill

Since Katerina’s availability does not allow for her to be in a morning shift, we’ll have to put Pierre there.

Juanita

Who gets the shift with the extra hour? The morning person or the evening person?

Bill

As far as overtime is concerned, it doesn’t matter. Both Elaine and Pierre are full time . . . . . . . For sure, Pierre is working a four-day week. I think we should give him the extra hour.

Juanita

OK. . . . So Pierre works 7 to 4 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Bill

We already put Katerina for Monday evening. Should we put her for Tuesday evening as well?

Juanita

Maybe . . . Let’s think this through a bit more . . . Elaine is already scheduled for three eight-hour shifts. One more shift will give her full-time hours of 32.

Bill

And I wouldn’t mind having her around for 10% Tuesday instead of Katerina. Let’s put her on for Tuesday afternoon from 4 to closing. Then we can place the cheaper part-timers for the rest of the afternoons.

Juanita

So, for Wednesday and Thursday, Pierre opens with a nine-hour shift, and Katerina closes with an eight-hour shift.

Bill

Shouldn’t Katerina get the nine-hour shift? If we have to give overtime, shouldn’t it go to the cheaper part-timers?

Juanita

You are right! We need to change Pierre’s hours on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 4 to 7 to 3. Katerina works a nine-hour shift from 3 to 12 both days.

Bill

That fills the head cashier schedule. Let’s check everyone’s hours! . . . Elaine has four eight-hour shifts for 32 hours. . . . .Farazay has three nine-hour shifts for 27. . . . . Katerina has three nine-hour shifts for 27. And Pierre, let’s see . . . .9 hours on Tuesday, and eight for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. . . he’s got 33 hours this week. The two full-timers have got their 32 hours, and no one has more than 40.

Juanita

I think we have done a good job with what we have been given. The part-timers got most of those extra overtime hours, so management should be pleased with that.

Bill

There’s not much we can do about the overtime. Maybe no one at the top will say anything.
